Abduction
Movement in which a limb moves away from the body.
Adduction
Movement in which a limb is brought closer to the body.
Agonist Muscles
Cause a movement.
Antagonist Muscles
Resist a movement.
Bodyweight Training
Strength training that uses one's own body weight as the resistance.
Core
All of the muscles that support and surround the lumbar spine including muscles of the lower back, pelvic floor and abdominals. The core provides a stable platform from which to launch all of the body's movements, by stabilizing the spine.
Extension
To increase joint angle (lengthen/extend).
Flexion
To decrease joint angle (bend).
Frontal Plane
Divides the body in half into front and back sections. Includes side-to-side movements such as a side lunge or jumping jack.
Functional Training
Exercises that involve training the body for the activities performed in daily life (source: Wikipedia.com).
Neutralizer Muscles
Prevent undesired movement.
Planar Training Method
A training method in which a workout equally incorporates all major muscle groups and equally uses all planes of motion.
Sagittal Plane
Divides the body into the right and left halves. Includes forward and backward movements such as a forward lunge or bicep curl.
Stabilizer Muscles
Fixate an area so another movement can occur.
Synergist Muscles
Assist another muscle.
Suspension Training
Uses a suspended device to use one's own body weight and gravity to perform multi-planar, compound exercise movements that develop strength, balance, flexibility, and joint stability simultaneously.
Transverse Plane
Divides the body in half by the upper and lower body sections. Includes rotational movements such as twisting, as well as movements in a horizontal position like a bench press.
